Packages for SuSE Linux 9.2 Compiled by Volker Kuhlmann =========================== If you would like me to create other packages for you, I will be more than happy to do so. Please contact me for a quote. * bibclean Pretty printer and syntax checker for BibTeX files. * bibtool Manages bibliographic data bases in BibTeX format. Good pretty-printer and syntax checker. * bibutils Conversion tools to convert different bibliography formats through a common XML (MODS) intermediate format. * cdrecord-dvdhack * cdrecord-ossdvd Use dvd+rw-tools instead, it's shipped by SuSE. * cowsay/cowthink (view this with a fixed-width / monospaced / courier font) __________________________________________________________ / Say it with the cow! The one gimmick you have to have... \ \ Other speaking/thinking things available too. / ---------------------------------------------------------- \ ^__^ \ (oo)\_______ (__)\ )\/\ ||----w | || || * dares DAta REScue. Rescue files from damaged ISO-9660 or UDF filesystems. Not so useful by itself, the program it goes with (h2cdimage) isn't available for Linux. * dosemu Packages of the latest development version of dosemu. * dvd+rw-tools Updated to version 6.1. * dvdisaster Creates error detection/correction codes for DVD images, and can apply them when the DVD becomes faulty. Also reads defective DVDs to hard disk as far as possible. Version 0.63 adopts the strategy for reading defective disks described in c't-Magazin 16/2005 (and implemented in their not-for-Linux h2cdimage program, if the description is correct). * fdupes Finds (and optionally deletes) identical files in directories, even if they have different names. * flpsed Interactively place text over an existing postscript or pdf file - very good for filling in these pdf forms! * gv The version which can transparently decompress bzip2 files is now shipped by SuSE. * html2text A current version is now shipped by SuSE. * ImageMagick3 This version of ImageMagick is made for makeimage, a tool for archiving and editing photos. Makeimage is now distributed separately (package scriptutils). To date, none of the available versions 4.x and 5.x of ImageMagick actually work correctly in all areas used by makeimage (and not many functions are used), newer IM versions are also noticably slower. This old version of ImageMagick has no bugs in those functions used by makeimage. To avoid collisions with other installed IM packages, the installation location for this package can be changed with rpm --prefix, default is /usr/local/X11R6. The IM3 wrapper will change the paths accordingly, so 'IM3 convert' will call the convert of this package. * iraf An image processing program, primarily for astronomy. Install the packages from SuSE 8.2. * midas ESO-MIDAS is the European Southern Observatory - Munich Image Data Analysis System, developed and maintained by the European Southern Observatory. MIDAS provides general tools for image processing and data reduction with emphasis on astronomical applications. Install the packages from SuSE 8.2. * msttcorefonts See http://volker.dnsalias.net/linux/msttcorefonts.html This is now integrated into yast; start the yast online update and install the "download Microsoft truetype core fonts". Also, SuSE now has a nifty font installation facility - copy all the X11 font files into some directory (e.g. under /usr/local) and place a symlink to it under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/, then run SuSEconfig --module fonts. * mutt Identical to SuSE's shipped version, except for 1) A time stamp on mail files is updated when the file was modified by mutt. 2) When a mail file is modified, chmod o-x is performed on the file, this works in with using a umask of 076 with procmail. * nedit 5.5 A very good graphical editor. (http://nedit.org/) The contrib area from nedit.org is also included in these packages. * openmotif21-libs Required for nedit. The version shipped with SuSE 9.2 is too buggy for nedit. * par A paragraph formatter similar to fmt, but much more powerful. * pdfbook Rearrange PDF files for booklet printing, or for printing multiple pages per sheet. * pdftk (http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/) The pdf tool kit. Concatenation, splitting, and manipulation of pdf files. Very useful. * png2pdf Converts PNG images to PDF. Useful for pdflatex. * proxytunnel * pstotext Converts PostScript or PDF to plain text. This program sometimes works in cases where ps2ascii fails. * scriptutils This collection of shell scripts helps with everyday tasks, often reducing the amount of typing otherwise required when using the standard utilities. Included are scripts for finding files, comparing directory trees, generating checksums, mastering and writing CDs, downloading URLs listed in special files via cron, and a few others. * shorten Shorten is an audio compression program. It is similar to gzip, but works much better on sound files. Compression rates are very good for lossless compression, and even better for lossy operation. It handles a variety of file formats. * smartmontools Controls and monitors storage devices using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.) built into ATA and SCSI Hard Drives. SuSE ships a reasonably current version. * spinner Spinner is an anti-idle program that transfers a few characters over a link in a set time interval. Prevents the link from being cut due to inactivity. * susegrep, susegrep-data9.2 A searchable index of the SuSE distribution media. Lists package descriptions, file lists etc. The package susegrep contains the program, but use scriptutils in preference. susegrep-data9.2 contains the index for 9.2. You may also install any of the susegrep-dataX.Y packages from previous SuSE versions in parallel. * transfig see -> xfig / transfig * wav2cdr Install the packages from SuSE 8.2. * wipe A current version is now shipped by SuSE. * WordNet Install the packages from SuSE 8.2. * workman A CD-player program based on xview. This one is recompiled from the SuSE 9.1 sources. It requires the lucida screen fonts in ISO8859 encoding, which are missing from SuSE's xorg packages. Install from SuSE 9.1 (and run SuSEconfig): workman From packages XFree86-fonts-{75,100}dpi the files /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/*/lu*-ISO8859* * xfig / transfig 3.2.5alpha5 Current alpha versions which have new features and work reasonably well. These packages are optimised for SuSE. All appliccable patches which SuSE applied to 3.2.4 are applied to this alpha version too. The binaries from http://www.xfig.org/alpha/ are for Red Hat and don't run on SuSE 9.1 because of differences in libraries at binary level. Install the xfig for SuSE 9.2, and the transfig for SuSE 9.1. * other/providers-NZ.conf Not a package, but copying this file to /usr/share/providers/NZ.conf makes a bunch of common New Zealand ISPs available in yast when configuring a modem. * other/slmodem.diff A patch to make the smartlink-softmodem driver work on some laptops, including Acer Aspire 1703. * other/sysconffiles-XXX.tar.bz2 A basic set of additional shell configuration files, and some patches for a number of programs.
